Substance Abuse Accomplishments

Towards these goals, we have accomplished the following:

  • Helped the school host and put on a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) program at the high school.
  • Sponsored and hosted the Montana Meth Project at the school.  Program was designed to show kids the negative effects of Meth and the growing problems Meth is causing in our state, county, and community.
  • Put on a Drunk Driving Accident Scene Recreation at the school with cooperation between all emergency services organizations in West Yellowstone.
  • Hosted two Town Hall style meetings for local businesses to introduce and encourage them to provide Drug Free Workplaces in our community.
  • Have hosted and taught State of Montana sanctioned Responsible Alcohol Sales and Services (RASS) classes.  These classes are designed to teach responsible sales techniques to all employees who sell alcohol; bartenders, servers, convenience store clerks, grocery store clerks, etc.  To date, we have trained over 300 people and currently have a board member trained to teach the class, with many more employee training classes scheduled.
  • Door to door effort made by our board members in an effort to convince businesses to join our Drug-Free Workplace coalition of businesses.  We have met with business owners, explained the process to become a drug-free workplace, created a customized drug testing policy specific for that business, and encouraged them to become part of this coalition.  To date, we have 20 individual businesses signed up and currently providing a drug-free work environment.  You can recognize these businesses by the Drug-Free Workplace stickers we have designed and provided each business to put in the window of their business.  Our goal is to have 50 businesses signed up by the end of the year, and continuing our efforts over the next few years to eventually include all businesses in our community.
  • Two of our board members have won the state of Montana Swimming Upstream Award (2010 & 2011).  This award is given by the state to individuals who are making extraordinary efforts in the area of helping keep our youth from abusing alcohol and moving their lives in a positive direction.
  • Tag It program:  flyers and bottle tags are being created to post on cooler doors, front counters, and bottles of alcohol.  These flyers and tags are designed to discourage legal adults from purchasing alcohol for our youth.  The message explains the severe legal consequences of such an act.
  • Presented and accomplished getting a curfew ordinance adopted in the Town of West Yellowstone for all youth under the age of 16 years of age.

Mental Health Accomplishments

  • We hosted mental health specialists before CHP started providing weekly services for this need.
  • Worked in conjunction with Community Health Partners to bring Mental Health services to West Yellowstone on a weekly basis, helping offset expenses related to travel to the southern end of Gallatin County.  CHP is currently offering twice a week counselors.  Currently, both counselors are booked solid for the two days a week they are here, showing that our need far exceeds what is currently available.
  • We are working toward a goal of getting community members trained in various fields to act as peer counselors for a variety of needs in our community.  These peer counselors would be available for immediate help and counseling 24/7, able to assist West Yellowstone emergency responders at all times of the day and night.  We currently have one board member trained for Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence counseling through the Bozeman foundation called Haven.  We have also involved the emergency counseling services of local ministers and our local Public Services Director.

Additional School Accomplishments

We have also been very involved in the school and efforts to keep our youth on a positive path.  In addition to the programs already mentioned above related to MADD, the Montana Meth Project, and the Swimming Upstream projects; we have put in place an All Star Kids Program.

  • · This program is designed to provide our youth with good role models within their own peer groups.  This program is patterned after a very successful national program where youth are nominated to be part of the all-star program.  They have some basic requirements to be considered, including a solid GPA, involvement in at least one extra-curricular activity, and some level of community involvement.  These youth are then issued a baseball style trading card with their picture and important information on the card.  These cards are then traded & collected among the kids and are good for points.  The value of each card can increase or decrease based on a variety of factors outlined within the program.  The cards and their points will be used for the youth to receive various prizes throughout the school year.  This program is designed to encourage and reward the youth for positive behavior, positive school grades and activity, and positive community involvement.  This program is in place and begin at the start of the 2012 school year.
  • · Tall Cop Says Stop program:  This program is designed for the parents and schoolteachers and is presented by Boise Police Officer Jermaine Galloway.  Officer Galloway was awarded the 2010 National Mickey Sadoff Award by MADD for efforts in underage drinking prevention and in 2009 received the Law Enforcement Officer of the year by OJJDP.  Officer Galloway’s program revolves around this saying, “You can’t STOP what you don’t know”.  When it comes to alcohol and substance abuse, things are always changing.  It can be hard to keep up with all the trends and practices of substance use and abuse.  Most communities want to stop the underage drinking and drug usage in their community.  After attending this presentation, parents and teachers will know what is out there, where to find it, how youth are abusing it, and they will have the knowledge to stop it!  We hope to be able to offer this program again, March 2020.
