We have also been very involved in the school and efforts to keep our youth on a positive path. In addition to the programs already mentioned above related to MADD, the Montana Meth Project, and the Swimming Upstream projects; we have put in place an All Star Kids Program.
- · This program is designed to provide our youth with good role models within their own peer groups. This program is patterned after a very successful national program where youth are nominated to be part of the all-star program. They have some basic requirements to be considered, including a solid GPA, involvement in at least one extra-curricular activity, and some level of community involvement. These youth are then issued a baseball style trading card with their picture and important information on the card. These cards are then traded & collected among the kids and are good for points. The value of each card can increase or decrease based on a variety of factors outlined within the program. The cards and their points will be used for the youth to receive various prizes throughout the school year. This program is designed to encourage and reward the youth for positive behavior, positive school grades and activity, and positive community involvement. This program is in place and begin at the start of the 2012 school year.
- · Tall Cop Says Stop program: This program is designed for the parents and schoolteachers and is presented by Boise Police Officer Jermaine Galloway. Officer Galloway was awarded the 2010 National Mickey Sadoff Award by MADD for efforts in underage drinking prevention and in 2009 received the Law Enforcement Officer of the year by OJJDP. Officer Galloway’s program revolves around this saying, “You can’t STOP what you don’t know”. When it comes to alcohol and substance abuse, things are always changing. It can be hard to keep up with all the trends and practices of substance use and abuse. Most communities want to stop the underage drinking and drug usage in their community. After attending this presentation, parents and teachers will know what is out there, where to find it, how youth are abusing it, and they will have the knowledge to stop it! We hope to be able to offer this program again, March 2020.
